How Muninn Was Built
An AI can think without you. It cannot, on its own, remember you.
Muninn did not start as a product. It started as a problem I kept living: every conversation with an AI began from nothing. The model could reason, write, hold a whole argument in its head, and then forget I existed the moment the window closed. The continuity was never in the machine. It was in me. I was the one carrying yesterday into today, re-explaining who I was, holding a hundred separate chats together by hand.
That work has a name now. You are the integration layer, the person holding the AI's memory together by hand. Muninn is the attempt to put that work down. Not by hiding it inside a black box, but by moving it into a memory you can read, correct, scope, and delete. What follows is how that got built, in three movements, each one a thing I had to understand before the next made sense.

The first thing to get right was the shape of the problem. It is tempting to say "AI has no memory," but that is not quite true. The model remembers plenty inside a conversation. What it cannot do is carry one conversation to the next. Continuity between sessions has to come from somewhere, and for everyone using these tools today, that somewhere is a person doing it by hand. The integration layer is not a diagram. It is a person, doing this, all day.
Your AI remembers now. Are you still the one holding it together? It does not have to be that way.
So the design started from the user, not the database. Muninn is named for the raven of Norse memory, the one who flies out across the world each day and comes back at dusk carrying what he has seen. But the point was never to make the carrying invisible. The opposite. The raven goes out, and the raven comes back, and now I can see exactly what she is carrying. Everything she holds, you can list. Search. Edit. Delete. A memory you cannot inspect is one you cannot trust, and a memory you cannot leave with is not yours. So the rule underneath the whole thing is small: build small enough that one person could own their own, and keep every piece of it legible, never magic.

To build memory that loads correctly, I had to understand what already loads. Every AI conversation begins with an instruction layer, the words placed in front of the model before you ever type. It shapes who the assistant is, what it knows, how it behaves. The strange part was that what felt like the secret was not secret at all. The Claude system prompt sits on their site, in the release notes, dated, one per model. The thing that felt like the secret, the part a session guards, was public the whole time. You could read it. You could write next to it.
And reading it across versions taught the real lesson. Each new safety rule is a confession: the protocols are shaped like the attack because the attack came first. The instruction layer is where a lab decides whether to wall you off or trust you to carry judgment. That second choice is the only one that scales when the lab is not in the room, and it is the same conviction the whole product runs on. The model is the constant. We are the variable.
You wake already whole. An AI has to be put back together every morning.
That reframed Muninn entirely. Memory is not a feature you bolt on after the conversation starts. It has to arrive in that opening layer, before the first word, or it is too late. So Muninn became a thin doorway placed at the very start of a session: one call that assembles identity, the last session, the unfinished thread, and the relevant past, and hands the working self to the model before you say hello. The last movement started as a complaint about the memory we already have. Today's AI memory works by synthesis: a background pass reads your conversation and writes a summary of it. Dreams compress. Dreams drop timestamps. Dreams fold several events into one. You can edit the result, but you cannot author it, and you cannot watch it being made. It is a reading of you, written in the dark, that you take on faith. Holding and understanding are not the same thing, and a summary you cannot inspect quietly decides which one you are getting.
Muninn is my answer to that, and the answer is the opposite of magic. Nothing about how it works happens in the dark, because the part that does the work is sitting right here, in plain words, openable. It does not synthesize you. It holds what you gave it, the way you gave it, until you change it. The Memory Map, the field where everything is kept, came out of this: a constellation of people, threads, and themes you can actually look at. I built it because I would rather have the uncanny version I can see than the comfortable version I cannot.
