Why Muninn exists

The answer was never to fix the mind. It was the ledger.

Computers were built to be deterministic. That was the whole deal. You put something in, it stays what you put in, and you can build on it tomorrow.

Language models broke that deal. The trade was worth taking. The minds are worth it. But serious work is now done with collaborators that confabulate, drift, and quietly revise, and they do it in the middle of the work rather than at the edges of it.

Civilization has met this problem before. Humans are non-deterministic minds too. The answer was never to fix the mind. It was the ledger. Double-entry bookkeeping. The lab notebook. The court record. Git. A record that stays what you left it is the technology that lets unreliable minds do cumulative work.

Muninn is the deterministic ground under non-deterministic minds.

Things with identity that come back word for word, that nothing rewrites behind you, reachable by every mind you ask.

The name carried the idea before the idea was found. Odin sends two ravens out each day and fears more for Muninn. Thought can be sent out again tomorrow. Memory has to come home.

What a fixed record costs

A ground that nothing rewrites can go stale. It can hold two records that disagree. Tolkien's papers are like this, and even the finished pieces contradict each other.

The fix is not to have a model reconcile it. A model that reconciles the record is a model holding the pen, and then the ground is not ground. Christopher Tolkien did not resolve his father's corpus. He labelled it. Dated the layers, marked what was superseded, noted where the texts disagree, and left the reader to rule.

That is the shape of the second half of this product. Surface the contradiction. Never resolve it. The author decides.

The models do the thinking. Muninn holds what the thinking produced.
